Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the 85 unique compounds found in the hemp plant. These compounds are known as cannabinoids, and CBD in particular is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most predominant cannabinoid in hemp, and has many beneficial properties.
In the U.S. Patent obtained by the Health and Human Development Department, they stated:
“Cannabinoids are potent antioxidants… they easily penetrate tissues giving them the ability to enter the central nervous system and brain.”
“Non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD are particularly advantageous as they are non-toxic… and exhibit unique antioxidant properties without the undesirable effects of THC.”
“The antioxidant strength of CBD is significantly greater than that of either Vitamin C or Vitamin E.”
Most legal CBD products that are in the market are extracts from hemp, the non-psychoactive form of cannabis. This hemp is allowed by federal law for cultivation, processing and marketing. It must contain less than .3% THC to be legal.
Cannabinoids are naturally created by the body, known as Endocannabinoids. They support our regulatory system to keep the body balanced (Homeostasis) and affect bodily processes such as appetite, mood, pain, and sleep.
Hemp, as with all cannabis, is a bio-accumulator which helps a plant grow dense and tall in a short growing cycle. But this also allows contaminants to seep from the soil into the plants. These contaminants can be found in poorer quality products.
How hemp is processed is also important. Hemp grown for industrial purposes may be treated with harsh solvents and chemicals when processed. Solvent methods are also used in CBD for consumption and residuals may be present. This is why it is incredibly important that any products for consumption be tested. Third-party testing results should be available from a supplier.
It is also very important to know the potency of any supplement that you add to your diet. An effective method for taking CBD is with a tincture. Tinctures are made from dissolving a concentrated hemp isolate into an oil like olive, avocado or coconut; a tincture concentration can range from 25mg to 2500mg. The more concentrate in a tincture, the less product may be needed to meet your health requirements.
Even with the wave of states legalizing medical marijuana, many physicians are still reluctant to prescribe cannabinoids because they are not sure what dosages to prescribe. After all, most medical schools never cover CBD in their pharmacology courses. Medical scientists are just now developing dosing schedules for medical hemp, medicinal marijuana, and their extracts including CBD.
