CBD and Spinal Cord Pain

Approximately 17,810 new spinal cord injuries occur each year in the United States. 

A spinal cord injury — damage to any part of the spinal cord or nerves at the end of the spinal canal (cauda equina) — often causes permanent changes in strength, sensation and other body functions below the site of the injury.

Spinal cord injuries (SCIs) impact nearly five million Americans each year. Some call the spinal cord an “information superhighway” because it’s what connects the brain to the nerves that provide feedback from all the different parts of the body. Because it plays such a crucial role in pain perception and bodily function, those who have a spinal cord injury can often have reduced quality of life. The chronic pain that people experience is both musculoskeletal pain problems and/or neuropathic pain.

How CBD Helps To Relieve Spinal Cord Pain

Research indicates that CBD may reduce back pain by reducing inflammation, combat anxiety & depression often associated with long-lasting or chronic back pain, help with muscle spasms, sleep and improving overall state of relaxation.

After a spinal cord injury in the acute phase, researchers have discovered that CBD can stimulate a neuroprotective response, helping activate two important sectors CB1 and CB2, which helps promote spontaneous recovery. These findings were discovered in a 2012 study in Spain.

Investigators at the University of Sao Paul in Brazil examined the impact of CBD on motor function post-SCI. They discovered CBD can help improve motor function. The study was done on rats that received injections of both placebo and CBD. These injections were done 3 hours after surgery and daily for six days after surgery. Researchers say the CBD needs to be taken within days of the injury.

Dosing Thoughts

Research studies have used doses from 15mg to as high as 600mg. Typical CBD supplements provide 20mg to 25mg. When taking CBD for inflammation, dosing can vary widely depending on the severity of the symptoms you are experiencing. One goal to consider is to use CBD to supplement or possibly replace pharmaceuticals you might be taking. CBD is an all-natural alternative that does not build up in your system and cannot be overdosed.

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement program. Many prescribed medications cannot and should not be stopped all at once.

It has been suggested to start with a dose of 10mg to 15mg of CBD twice a day. After a few days, you may want to reduce prescribed (or over-the-counter) medications incrementally while increasing your CBD dosage the following day. Steps of 10mg are suggested to help monitor changes. Monitor your symptoms; be aware of how you feel. Don’t hurry the process. Wait 2 to 3 days between changes.
