Prion & Mad Cow Disease

CBD and Prion

Prion diseases are a group of neurodegenerative disorders that can affect both humans and animals.

They’re caused by the  deposition of abnormally folded proteins in the brain, which can cause changes in:

  • memory
  • behavior
  • movement

Prion diseases cause a progressive decline in brain function due to misfolding of proteins in the brain — particularly the misfolding of proteins called prion proteins (PrP). Prion diseases are very rare. Approximately 350 new cases of prion disease are reported each year in the United States. Researchers are still working to understand more about these diseases and to find an effective treatment. Currently, prion diseases are always eventually fatal.

How CBD May Help Prion Diseases

There is currently one published study on the effect of cannabidiol for treating prion disease.

This study suggests that CBD may protect neurons against the multiple molecular and cellular factors involved in the different steps of the neurodegenerative process, which takes place during prion infection. Non psychoactive cannabidiol prevents prion accumulation and protects neurons against prion toxicity. When combined with its ability to target the brain and its lack of toxic side effects, CBD may represent a promising new anti-prion drug.

Using CBD to combat prion diseases are related to its ability to provide neuroprotection. CBD helps promote synaptic transmission and enhances neurotransmitter activity. It also prevents the entry and accumulation of misfolded anterior proteins in the brain, which increases your lifespan.

As a muscle relaxant, CBD oil helps reduce the muscle stiffness that usually results from illness. It also helps treat ataxia and movement disorders by preventing uncontrolled contractions of different muscle groups. CBD also helps fight fatigue by modulating serotonergic activity.

Signs of prion diseases include sudden changes in mood, memory, and movement, such as:

  • Anxiety or depression
  • Balance problems
  • Changes in behavior or personality.
  • dementia
  • Memory loss
  • Loss of muscle control, such as jerks.
  • Seizures
  • Walking unsteadily
  • Vision problems

Researchers continue to examine the likelihood that cannabinoids protect the neurological association with studies that support a favorable probability of protecting nerve cells by CBD from progressive decay caused by prions. Scientists have observed that CBD that harmoniously interacts with the peripheral nervous system reduces the production of protease-resistant prion proteins (PrPres) in the brain. This procedure significantly increased the survival rate in scientific trials. Neuroscientists have also discovered non-psychoactive CBD compounds that limit the growth of PrPres proteins in prion-infected animal cells.

This reveals that CBD has potential health benefits for prion. The conventional treatments available for this condition only help treat the symptoms. Therefore, it is reasonable to test CBD as a dietary supplement, as there are no side effects.

Dosing Thoughts

Research studies have used doses from 15mg to as high as 600mg. Typical CBD supplements provide 20mg to 25mg. When taking CBD for lupus pain, dosing can vary widely depending on the depth of pain you are experiencing. One goal to consider is to use CBD to replace pharmaceuticals you might be taking. CBD is an all-natural alternative that does not build up in your system and cannot be overdosed.

May we suggest trying one of our CUBED Hemp based CBD Tinctures. Available in 1200mg or 3600mg concentrations, mixed with our exclusive Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Italy or NYS-sourced sunflower seed oil. Our Graduated Sprayer makes it simple to dose properly.

It is important to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement program. Most prescribed medications cannot and should not be stopped all at once.
It has been suggested to start with a dose of 10mg to 15mg of CBD twice a day. After a few days, you may want to reduce prescribed meds incrementally while increasing your CBD dosage the following day. Steps of 10mg are suggested to help monitor changes. Monitor your symptoms; be aware of how you feel. Don’t hurry the process. Wait 2 to 3 days between changes. This will allow you to determine the dosing that your body requires to meet your goals, while documenting how your medications interact.
